I'm an animation background painter, game visual development artist and illustrator based in great Los Angeles area.
I was born in Anyang city, one of the oldest cities in China. I grew up in a strict household, my father is an electronics engineer and mother is a pharmacist, which gave me an earnest and responsible personality. My family takes traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy as their hobby, which brought me the raw motivation of doing art, to be a Chinese painting master. As time passed by, my interest changes to the moving images, the dynamic shapes and vivid colors. In 2009, I got a B.F.A. degree in Animation in China Central Academy of Fine Art. What I did mostly is traditional drawing and 2D animation, which was not enough to me, so I decided to continue my studies in the U.S.
I went to Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) for 4 years, where I got dual M.A. in Animation and Illustration. During my time here, I tried my hands in the 3D field, which got me another perspective to look at my art creations. As I was working as the art director in my school collaborative project, Snow Boat, I was trying to put the 2D artistic texture into this 3D animated film. It was a lot of experimenting, the results are always unknown yet interesting, sometimes are an amazing surprise. I enjoy playing with different combinations of shapes, colors, lights, and textures to present various characteristics of stories. One of the quotes from Neil Gaiman is my favorite: “Go and make interesting mistakes, make amazing mistakes, make glorious and fantastic mistakes. Break rules. Leave the world more interesting for your being here. Make. Good. Art.”
